Mardi Himal Trek - Part 1 (the ascent)

Mel: ‘I don’t mind the odd uphill’
It was about a 45min taxi ride from Pokhara to Phedi, where our hike began. The little taxi probably wasn’t made for this bumpy, rocky dirt road (but we weren’t the only taxi out there!). We started our hike down by the river, where we paid some lovely old Tibetan ladies a huge amount for some good luck brackets. We needed all the luck we could get.

This was our plan:
Phedi: 1130m elevation
Pothana :1900m elevation
Forest Camp: 2500m elevation
High Camp: 3550m elevation (2 nights)
View Point: 4200m
Sidhing: 1280m elevation

Day 1:
Phedi (1130m) to Pothana (1900m)
Straight into a steep stair climb in the heat of the morning, then hiked through rice fields and literally across people’s back yards. Had our first experience of an icy shower, which was surprisingly good despite cooler temperature that evening. I swore the bed was on a lean with feet lower than head because my legs ached that night! Woke up to stunning sunrise.

Day 2:
Pothana (1900) to Forest Camp (2500m)
This was tough. It was around 5hrs hiking uphill and as soon as I got to Forest Camp I passed out on the bed with exhaustion, boots still on. Another cold shower. At dinner the conversation turned to bears, snow leopards and mountain lions in the area. That night I had nightmares of bears running through the camp. We were cold and antisocial. We were both feeling really low, conversation turned to going home early. We diagnosed ourselves with ‘social media withdrawals’ and felt better when we had a reason for low mood. (Later reflection, we were just exhausted). Sunrise was average due to cloud. Not our favourite time.

Day 3:
Forest Camp (2500m) to High Camp (3550m)
Another tough climb, was slow due to elevation and fatigue. Once we rose above the clouds we were high on life and stunned by the beautiful views. Very cold at this height. No shower, just a bucket and cold water. Terrible squat hole toilet. Heard story of local telling tourist he had a hot shower with a view, so took the tourist out the back and cracked open a hose and handed it to tourist with ice water going everywhere. Amazing sunrises and sunsets here. Loved this spot. From here we would get up at dawn and hike the final stint to watch the sunrise from viewpoint (4200m elevation) - photos to come
